Cool autumn weather is perfect for taking walks. However, with the days getting shorter and the leaves starting to fall, it’s important to take a few extra precautions. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.
Pedestrian Safety Tips:
- Always Make Sure That You’re Visible – The days are getting shorter. Make sure that you are wearing lighter colored clothing and that drivers can see you walking — especially at night! Make sure that you are walking in well-lit areas.
- Stay Alert At All Times – Always stay alert when you are walking. Stay off of your phone and make sure that you are keeping your eye on your surroundings. You should always make sure that you can hear what is going on around you. Avoid wearing headphones when you’re walking so that you can hear cars around you.
- Walk In Designated, Safe Locations – Keep your location in mind when walking. Use the crosswalks when available and make sure that you cross at a safe time! Stay off of highways and busy roads that put you at a higher risk of injury.
- Avoid Walking While Intoxicated – Alcohol reduces your inhibitions, reflexes and awareness of your surroundings. Make sure that you are capable of being fully alert and aware when walking this fall.
