The Most Common Construction Accidents

The Most Common Construction Accidents
Spread the love

Every year, hundreds of American construction workers lose their lives to accidents. Others lose eyes and limbs. Many of the injured miss work and are forced to file workers’ compensation claims. Construction work is dangerous, but permitting accidents to happen is not a way of doing business.

Here are some things to watch out for:

Falls
To avoid costly liability for injuries and falls, employers must place guards around or above holes in the floor to keep workers from walking into them. Railings and toe boards are required around elevated surfaces.

Workers must also be protected with guardrails and toe boards where they could fall into dangerous machinery or caustic chemicals. As required, workers must have attached safety harnesses, handrails, and safety nets. Floors should be kept as clean and dry as possible.

Getting Struck by Flying Objects
Suitable eye protection equipment or face guards are absolutely required when using power tools. In areas where objects might fall from above, hard hats are mandatory. Measures to limit the number and size of falling objects are well-advised. If necessary, safety nets can capture falling debris.

Electrocutions
Electrocutions are usually preventable. Electrical wiring should be code compliant, and workers should follow appropriate “lock-out tag-out” procedures when servicing electrical equipment. Sources of hazardous energy should be clearly identified, with warning signs as appropriate.

Crushing by Objects
Forklifts and other powered equipment should be operated only by certified and qualified personnel. Pinch points should be clearly identified on machinery and guarded where possible to prevent injuries. Workers should not occupy unsafe structures or place excessive loads on elevated surfaces.

Not every accident can be averted, but by taking a proactive approach to preventing accidents, workers are kept safe. When something goes wrong, it may be negligence on behalf of the business owner. Safety is everyone’s business. You will gain peace of mind by doing your part to prevent injuries.
